Gladiator Slot
Smart game makers are not slow to pick up on a winning idea and converting our favourite blockbuster movies & TV shows to slot games – it is just good sense.
Playtech’s Gladiator slot is one of those games that has made a successful transition from the silver screen into the handy format of your mobile phone or PC.
Where do we start with the Gladiator Slot Machine? The Playtech version of the game is in our All Time Top 10 Slots list- it’s up there with Nine Masks of Fire from Gameburger, Thunderstruck 2 from Microgaming and NetEnt’s Finn and the Swirly Spin.
And this homage to the multi-award winning director, Ridley Scott’s Roman epic, which can be played at Bet365 Casino, isn’t the only game that falls into this genre.
If you feel winter is coming then you can take a spin on the Game of Thrones video slot, or if you love a scare then there’s The Mummy slot, or take it all the way with the Age of the Gods range.
Look and Feel
So how does this game look? Pretty hot. The design of the Gladiator slot has been inspired from the movie.
The background to the reels is the colosseum where the gladiatorial battles took place. The game is full of graphics from the blockbuster movie.
The soundtrack is also lifted from the film and works well with the movie clips when they pop up, luring you into the action.
Gladiator Gameplay
Gladiator is a five-reels, three-row and 25 payline battle for cash where you play to come out on top without even putting on your armour!
The main characters from the film make up the more valuable icons of play.
Top of the tree is the creepy Emperor Commodus (Joaquim Phoenix), followed by his sister the beautiful Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), the white bearded political opponent Gracchus (Derek Jacobi) and fellow slave and friend, Juba (Djimon Hounsou).
Next is Proximo (played by hell raising actor Oliver Reed, who sadly died from a heart attack during a break from filming in Valletta, Malta, forcing the studio to make a high tech hologram of his final scene to disguise his absence).
The lower value icons of play are the Ace through 9 of the card deck made out in fancy golden lettering.
The one let-down of the game for me was that Russel Crowe doesn’t make an appearance – unlike his co-stars. Instead we have the metal mask worn by Maximus, the movie’s hero played by Russ as the game’s Wild.
The Wild substitutes for all icons, except the Scatter. The game’s Scatter is the towering Colosseum building in Rome where the battles took place.
The Scatters are the key to triggering the bonus fun.
Colosseum Feature
To get the Colosseum Bonus in play, just land three or more Colosseum Scatters and you will enter a picking game where you choose stones from the famous stadium.
There are four rows of stones to choose from. Each layer holds different treats with the first row containing free games. The second is better still, with freebie games with multipliers up for grabs.
Row three has extras Scatters and row four delivers too with extra Wilds. For once that wicked Emperor Commodus is on our side, if you can land him during the free spins mode on the middle reel, then he gifts you a further three free spins!
Who says he’s just a homicidal maniac!
The others include juicy multipliers, free games, additional Scatters to up the ante and even more Wilds to add to the reels and make you winning combos.
The Gladiator Bonus
There is also a second feature, those Playtech designers like to keep us busy! This time, is you land the Wild on the middle three reels you will enter the Gladiator Bonus.
Once again a picking game is the order of the day with a selection of nine gladiator helmets in gold, silver and bronze to choose from.
And better still, you get a generous nine picks with some good prizes to reveal including a brain-sizzling 45x multiplier!
If the extras in the game aren’t quite enough of a lure, there is also a Gamble Game where after any win you can stake your winnings on the colour of an unturned card. You might be in luck and double your winnings or you might crash and burn ending the featuring and wiping out your wins. Play it sparingly.
Gladiator Jackpot
Look out for the Gladiator Jackpot slot- a version of the same game which is linked to a progressive jackpot that often ticks up over €1,000,000.
Remember, you will be making a small contribution to the winning pool every time you bet on this version of the game.
That’s not going to worry you if you scoop the big one of course! The casinos we recommend here feature both versions of the game- standard and progressive jackpot linked.
Conclusion
Playtech’s Gladiator slot is a Roman romp of a slot game with all the pizazz and authentic movie elements that make this a great slot for fans.
When the wins come in they are on the generous side thanks to those extra Wilds and Scatters in the Colosseum Bonus.
With the interactive elements of the movie, the slick styling and generous Commodus on the reels there is a decent chance of coming up trumps in this game that still feels fresh and fun.
A great slot: this game was a trailblazer. There are games that match this slot, but we find ourselves drifting back to this game time and time again.
