The Forbidden Throne slot is a fantasy game from Microgaming that looks pretty stunning when you fire it up, we have to say.
Was this the start of Microgaming’s fight back against the Swedish design houses like NetEnt, Thunderkick (the people behind the Esqueleto Explosivo slot) and ELK?
The game certainly looks the part and they have obviously spent a long time thinking about mobile and tablet players.
Visually, it ticks all of the boxes, but what about the game play? Let’s take a look.
How to Play Forbidden Throne
The Forbidden Throne slot is a fixed 40 pay-line game with some interesting features not least the WILD feature.
There are 5 wilds in this game- and here’s the main draw- rather than symbols, they are “Mystical Wild Reels” that fill all 3 rows.
There’s one of these Stacked Wilds guaranteed on each and every spin and you can theoretically land up to 5- which means all the symbols are wild.
You’ll get at least one Wild Reel on every spin in the base game AND the free spins by the way.
You adjust the number of coins and coin size to select your total bet amount. Wins in the pay-table are shown in money- so you’ll notice that they change when you move you bet amount up and down.
There’s a stallion, a scantily dressed maiden called Sorconass (yes, really) who’s wearing not much more than jungle boy in the Tarzan slot, a mystical castle (looks a bit like Avalon), an Elven Knight and a phoenix.
The two legendary guardian are Wulthor the Elven Lord of Fire and Sorconass the Queen of Ice.
Free Spins
You trigger the free spins in the time honoured fashion- by getting 3 or more scatters which is the …….., what is that symbol? A ring, a vortex? We’re not sure.
It’s kind of a gold mystical thingy, so look out for them.
Let’s call it a Fiery Orb, shall we, things certainly heat up if you get 3 or more of them.
Guaranteed Wild Reels are also the name of the game in the free spins round, so say your prayers for some magical wins.
The cool thing about these symbols is that they shine through the Wild Reels and you can re-trigger the free games if you get 3 or more in the free spins round.
That just happens to be one of our favourite features in a slot, so that is getting a thumbs up from us already.
Most of the time you will trigger the free spins with 3 scatters and that gives you 10 free spins.
If you get 4 you are in line for 20 free spins and you’ll get a hefty 30 if you manage to land 5.
Of course, if you re-trigger, you might get some additional free games.
Standard Wild
As well as all of those Wild Reels, there is also a standard wild symbol in this game which is the Forbidden Throne logo. 5 of these on a pay-line nets you 12.5x your bet.
The other symbols are beautifully drawn images from the legend of the Forbidden Throne, so expect to see fire and snowflakes (Game of Thrones anyone?), gems, knights helmets, ancient texts, and so on.
The game pays from left to right (only the highest win per line is paid).
Summary
This was a real step up for Microgaming in the tradition of their Arthurian slots like the original Avalon and the Avalon 2 slot.
It’s beautifully designed and has some features that we haven’t seen elsewhere, such as the Wild Reels.
The game is big on wilds, in fact- it majors on this rather than having fancy bonus rounds. The game play reminds us a bit of Starburst, in fact, which is a very popular game.
This slot with its simple game-play that promises lucrative bursts is very popular with players.
Watch out though- this game is pretty volatile! RTP is around 96%.
